Coco is a medium brown, medium-sized, ever-curious goat. She was brought to the Sanctuary Farm in 2006 and there was no information given to us about her background. She was probably 2 years old.

From the time of her arrival, Coco was comfortable with the routine and life in the barnyard with the older donkeys. Her favourite perch has always been on the staircase to the loft, where she can sit peacefully, chewing her cud and watching the activity below.

Early in her third year at the Sanctuary, Coco’s udders became filled with milk and our veterinarian considered that she was experiencing a false pregnancy, something that can happen to nanny goats. The swelling made it awkward for Coco when she walked and several medications were tried in the hope that the reaction would pass. However, this was not the case and so Coco was taken to the Ontario Veterinary College where she first had an ovarectomy and then a mastectomy in order to put an end to the incessant milk production.

Three days after the operation, Coco was brought back to the DSC Farm where she was placed in a straw-filled stall so that she might be quiet during the recovery.

Today, Coco is an energetic member of the DSC family and, like all goats, she is always ready to nibble at anything new in the hopes that it might be interesting food!
