Gelding (male donkey)

Gerry and his two offspring mules, Rowan and Coal, were living on a farm on the South Bruce Peninsula. Neighbours, who are DSC supporters, had long been concerned about the animals' welfare at the farm; the owner of the animals, who rented the property, was often absent from the farm for long periods at a time, leaving the animals with no care.  When the renter finally was evicted and moved out, the  owner of the property  found  the animals had been left behind without proper shelter or food. On recommendation of the neighbours he contacted the DSC. We immediately picked up Gerry, Coal and Rowan and brought them to the Sanctuary Farm.

Like all male donkeys that arrive at the DSC intact, Gerry was gelded as soon as his quarantine time was over.

Over his lifetime Gerry had received very little handling and while he has come a long way since then, he is still hesitant to walk into the barn and see the farrier. Gerry is prone to painful thrush in his feet and is kept on a shorter farrier schedule to treat it and keep him comfortable.  Therefore, Gerry will continue to receive consistent training to make these events less stressful for him.

Gerry is a very affectionate donkey who loves people.
