The DONKEY SANCTUARY OF CANADA Foster Farm Program,
places rehabilitated donkeys in pairs, as pets, on permanent loan at suitable
homes. The donkeys selected for foster farms are those that would benefit
from the more individual love and attention that can be provided in a private
farm. Due to travel costs and ongoing support, only those farms located
within a three-hour drive of Guelph, Ontario can be considered.
Taking care of donkeys is a rewarding and serious responsibility and there
is need to be diligent and consistent in care and feeding. Foster Farms
must sign an agreement committing to the Terms and Conditions of Fostering
DSC donkeys. A Field Officer will visit your farm at least twice a year
to check on the donkeys’ well-being, to offer advice and to answer
questions.
As a member of DSC Foster Farm community, you will receive a free copy of
the biannual Foster Farm Newsletter. If you have a donkey, there is always
a story to tell and you are invited to share your stories and pictures with
over 20 other foster farms. The Newsletter will also have timely articles
to assist you with the care of your donkeys.
There is no charge for the donkeys, however, a $40. fee is payable prior
to your farm inspection. If approved, this fee will be applied to the cost
of the 70 page DSC Donkey Care Manual. You will also be asked to contribute
towards the costs of delivering donkeys to your farm at 60¢/km. While
at your farm, the donkeys remain under the ownership of the DONKEY
SANCTUARY OF CANADA and if, for any reason, they need to be returned
to the Sanctuary Farm, transportation will be free of charge.
Foster Farms are expected to cover the costs of the donkeys’ feed,
veterinary visits, regular worming/vaccinations and farrier visits. As a
very general guide, the annual costs of care will be around $1000 for each
donkey but much depends on the donkey’s health, the cost of hay, etc.
Before making your final decision to apply, we advise strongly that you
do the following:
1. Discuss with your veterinarian and a farrier
in your area to ensure that you can engage their services. By contacting
them you will have a better idea of the costs involved in caring for donkeys.
2. Read the DSC Foster Farm Program
Brochure (answers to most frequently asked questions)
3. Read and agree to the Terms
and Conditions
4. Review Costs for Keeping a Donkey
5. Review Time Commitment and Tasks
