Help Us Write a Book!

The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada wants you to help us write a book! We’re inviting our supporters, donors, visitors, and volunteers to write a drabble about a donkey or mule from the DSC that you like, know, admire, or even groom!

Your first question is probably, “What is a drabble?” A drabble is a form of creative writing that is exactly 100 words long, excluding the title. The drabble, although short on words, should be a complete story that contains a beginning, middle, and a satisfactory end.

Your drabble can be about any DSC donkey of your choosing and be about an event in their life. It can be voiced by the donkey, someone who knows the donkey, or just how the donkey makes you feel. Since donkeys and mules live in the moment, our drabbles will be in the present tense but can take place at any point in time.

When all of the drabbles are collected, we will be putting selected works into a book that will then be sold as a way to raise funds for the Donkey Sanctuary of Canada. In every left page in the book, there will be a donkey’s photo and on the accompanying page, that animal’s drabble.

Don’t worry, this isn’t a writing contest! Just tell us your best short story about your favourite donkey or mule and know that your work will be published to help care here at the DSC.

March 1st, 2019 is our deadline for submissions and we hope that yours will be one of them. The drabble entries will be numbered and a committee will make the final selections. Please submit your drabble by email to
