Eeyore is a large dapple gray Standard gelding who was born in 1996. Eeyore lived with his owners on a farm in Eastern Ontario, and learned to help with all sorts of work on the farm. Eeyore was trained to be ridden, pulled a cart, and even helped to skid logs out of the forest.
Eeyore’s owners contacted the DSC when they were no longer able to rent the pasture in which Eeyore lived, and they were forced to keep him in a pasture further down the road with a herd of cattle. Cattle typically are fed a very rich diet with high proteins and sugars, and on this kind of diet, donkeys will have many medical problems, including obesity and laminitis, a painful condition of the feet. Eeyore’s owners were concerned that he would not do well being kept with the cattle, and requested that he be admitted to the DSC where he will receive lifelong care.
Living on his own for so long, Eeyore can be very shy around new people, but with time, he is learning that everyone here at the DSC will care for him as much as his former caregivers did. He is learning gradually to socialize with other donkeys. Experience will show him that the Sanctuary is a peaceful place to be, where there is lots of food, attention and affection for all to share.
