Donating securities makes good financial sense. In most cases, we tend to think of cash when making donations to charities. Now, however, in Canada the giving of securities is becoming much more common and this method is often superior to cash. In 2007, the federal government decision was made to allow donations of publicly listed securities to public charities to be exempt from capital gains taxation.
Contributing securities is beneficial because the individual receives a tax credit for the donation and also avoids paying taxes on the capital gains accumulated on the securities.
