Eeyore is a large dapple gray Standard gelding who was born in 1996. Eeyore lived with his owners on a farm in Eastern Ontario, and learned to help with all sorts of work on the farm. Eeyore was trained to be ridden, pulled a cart, and even helped to skid logs out of the forest.
Eeyore’s owners contacted the DSC when they were no longer able to rent the pasture in which Eeyore lived, and they were forced to keep him in a pasture further down the road with a herd of cattle. Cattle are typically fed a very rich diet with high protein and sugar levels. On this type of diet, donkeys will develop many medical problems, including obesity and laminitis, a painful condition of the feet. Eeyore’s owners were concerned that he would not do well being kept with the cattle, and requested that he be admitted to the DSC where he will receive lifelong care.
