Animal Care Assistant

(Part-time, Sat-Sun, 8am – 4pm, 16 hours/week)


We are seeking a dedicated individual to join our DSC Team as a part-time Animal Care Assistant. The primary responsibility of this role is to oversee and perform various activities related to animal welfare, including barn chores, events, animal care consulting, and other farm operations as required.

 

 

 

Education:

Must Have:

  • High school diploma
  • Willingness to undertake work-related training as required.

 Asset:

  • University degree or college diploma (in process or obtained)
  • Degree or diploma related to animal husbandry or equine management
  • Courses/Certificates in equine facilities management or animal husbandry

Major Subjects/Specialties:

  • Courses/Certificates in animal care, equine biology/physiology, equine nutrition, equine management

 

Experience:

Must Have:

  • Equine and equine facilities work experience
  • 2+ years equine handling and care experience

Asset:

  • Experience with handling/caring for donkeys, mules and/or hinnies
  • 1+ year of interacting with the public in a professional setting
  • Experience with animal welfare organizations

 

Responsibilities:

  • 50% Animal Care – e.g., monitor animals diet, health, condition, behaviour, feeding per established schedule, assist with veterinary/farrier visits, medical care, grooming, shaping/training activities
  • 20% Barn and Facilities Maintenance – e.g., routine cleaning, sweeping, mucking, general maintenance and repairs of barn, barnyard, shelters, paddocks
  • 20% Public Relations and Education – e.g., support fund development, Open Days activities
  • 10% Administration – e.g., daily logs/updates and data entry (Advantage), animal care advice, provide input regarding activities affecting animal care 


Knowledge:

Essential:

  • Animal care and husbandry knowledge
  • Interest in animal welfare issues
  • Computer literate (Microsoft Office)
  • Full current valid driving license

Desirable:

  • Humane, outdoor, and/or equine education
  • Familiarity with societal issues regarding abuse of animals

 

Skills and Abilities:

Essential:

  • Physical fitness and the ability to lift approx. 20 kg on a frequent basis
  • Ability to work with large animals
  • Comfortable with handling, grooming, and administering medications
  • Willingness to interact with the public
  • Willingness to work outside in adverse weather conditions

 Desirable:

  • First Aid/CPR Certification


Equipment Use Required:

  • Ability to operate or be trained to operate medium-sized farm equipment (Skid Steer or Tractor)

HOST FARM & OUTREACH EDUCATION ADMINISTRATOR

(Part-time - 2-3 days/week)

Who we are:

The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada is a not-for-profit registered charity dedicated to providing a lifelong home to donkeys, mules and hinnies who are unwanted, neglected, abused, or otherwise need sanctuary. We have been saving equine lives and have provided sanctuary to over 300 donkeys, mules, and hinnies since 1992.

About the opportunity:

The Host Farm & Outreach Education Administrator will support the Host Farm & Outreach Education Manager in a part-time role, for 2-3 days per week (minimum one day/week on-site and on education event days).

What you’ll do:

  • Program and resource planning and development
  • Internal administration of the Host Farm Network
  • Point of first contact for our Host Farm application process and for general education inquiries
  • Assist in the development of triannual newsletter for the Host Farms
  • Coordinate the organization of outreach education webinars and seminars

 

Qualifications:

  • Strong commitment to the cause of animal welfare
  • 5+ years of experience in education
  • Composition skills in writing and experience in newsletter production
  • Experience with Microsoft Office [Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.]
  • Experience in project coordination
